'Where would any of us be without family and friends?' - Kobi Yamada
This quote by inspirational publicist Kobi Yamada was at the centre of a most romantic and symbolic wedding celebration on the banks of the Murray River. For Terrina Hatfield and Jason Phelan, family and friends were certainly the focus, with 190 travelling from throughout Australia and overseas to celebrate their marriage on Saturday, 17 October 2009.
"Our wedding was all about love," Terrina said.
"Love for each other and for those around us. To have our family and friends contribute creatively through their love for us was really important for us and for our special day."
Jason and Terrina went to school together in Echuca and have always been good friends. It took 20 years and more than 3,500 kilometres apart before they realised that there was more to their relationship than friendship - although that friendship remains at the nucleus of their relationship.
About to leave Echuca to board a plane home to Perth after his annual Christmas visit home, Jason realised that he couldn't leave Echuca this time without telling Terrina how he felt about her. Five days later, he was back in Echuca and the couple, after spending a week together, decided they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
Two months later Jason had relocated back to Echuca, by March they were engaged, in April expecting their first baby and married in October. The wedding ceremony incorporated their Catholic faith, along with their love of nature and the environment.
"There were so many elements of our lives we wanted to incorporate into our wedding ceremony, ideas which came from the heart - and 3am brainwaves,"
Terrina said.
"Every single guest played their part in putting together this celebration - the only gifts we wanted were ones which would contribute to the day," she said.
